In order to excel in blogging, we need readers and without them, blogging is just a waste of time. Have you created time to check your analytics and study your bounce rate?

The tips mentioned below is just one of the pinch of reasons why you have a high one and you can do some split testing to find out ways to reduce your bounce rate.

Why do we blog?

We blog for money; and how do we make money online?

We need traffic; and how do we generate traffic?

By following the rules Erik wrote on how to increase traffic; OK I’ve done all that and I have traffic now but why did you say you won’t read my blog?

Good Question!

5 good Reasons why I won’t Read your Blog

Computer With Error Icon

1. You have an Unfriendly Design

There are some kinds of designs that can make your blog difficult to access, bad navigations, bad fonts (difficult to read) and many more.

It all originates from your theme and your configuration. Your blog design is the first thing that must be considered because that’s the first thing visitors will see when they land on your blog; they won’t hesitate to leave your blog if your design is not friendly.

My little advice for you is to go for an attractive and responsive theme, for more insight on this check out the things to consider before going for the best blog design

2. Your Content lacks Quality

If you’re on a journey to becoming a successful blogger then the first step you must take is to write quality contents on your blog. It’s already a national anthem and you know what’s on my mind; “Content is king”.

You’ve bypassed your design and you’ve gotten good grades for that right? Now it’s time you focus on writing quality contents (if you really want me to stay longer on your blog).

I do hear people saying that your content must have so and so amount of words before it can be called a quality content, I totally don’t believe that myth.

All you have to do is to write according to your style, regardless of the quantity of your content, if it has a good quality then you’ll gain readers that’ll read and share them but don’t write and relax thinking that your content will go viral.

It might be a little gold in a large desert. If you don’t promote your content then nobody is actually going to read them.

3. Your Popups are annoying

Popups are great ways to get more followers or subscribers and I use it on my blog to, I don’t see anything bad in it but most of us use it the wrong way (especially facebook popups) and this annoys readers of your blog.

Try configuring your popup to show up once or twice in a specific time interval and not to show always.

An example is visiting the homepage of a blog > welcomed by a facebook popup; clicking on your latest blog post > welcomed by a facebook popup > Navigate to one of your pages > welcomed by a facebook pop.

Duhh that’s too much, can you see that “X” button above your browser? I won’t hesitate to click it and I’m sure you’ll do the same if you’re in my shoes.

4. Too much Ads

Why would I go against having adsense on your blog? I have google adsense on mine too but it’s just in two permanent positions; my header and my sidebar.

According to Google’s policy, the maximum number of ad you can have on your blog is three but most of us went against that rule (by bombarding their blog with tons of ads) after complying with Google’s policy before getting adsense approval.

Avoid too much ads on your blog because majority of bloggers hate this and they will leave your blog if they’re distracted by it.

I also noticed that google adsense is one of the scripts that slows down our blog but never mind, you’re not a speed junkie like I am. Just make your ad moderate and don’t let it distract your readers.

This is off topic but I’ve have to shoot it out, folks are now blinded to ads and the blogging niche has the lowest CPC apart from niche sites where you can even get $10 or more per click.

5. You don’t reply to comments

Replying to comments is my fort and I gave this same rule to my guest bloggers. Tell me, if you leave your readers with unanswered questions do you think they’ll come back to your blog?

Definitely not unless it’s a content they can’t resist to read but don’t expect their comments because they wouldn’t want to leave your blog with unanswered questions again.

You might be lucky though, they might drop a comment but don’t get it twisted, they’re just building backlinks.

Replying to comments is one of the best ways to create connections with your readers and get returning visitors for your blog so don’t underestimate it. I’ve see blogs with hundreds of comments yet the blog author still create time to reply to those comments, if they can do it then you can too.

Finally

If you really want me to stay longer on your blog then you have to implement these tips mentioned above. With these tips you’re going to build your readership and create more connection.

Have you implemented them?

Expect me on your blog and if they are perfect then count me as your new reader.

What are the features that annoy you whenever you visit a blog?

Do share them with us; we would love to hear your view.

If you run your own website or blog, then I’m sure that you will be interested to learn more about SEO.  It is, after all, one of the best ways to drive traffic to a site.

Now if you search online, there is a lot of conflicting advice on the subject – some of it good and some of it bad.

The only tips that you should be following are the ethical SEO tips that actively help your site, without abusing the system.

SEO Has A Bad Name

For some people, SEO has a pretty poor reputation online.  It can be seen as a way to somehow “cheat” the system or gain an unfair advantage over rivals.

This isn’t helped by the fact that there are some people (a small minority) that do try to abuse the system to further their own cause.

This has led to some to even suggest that search engine optimization be called something different.

It Can Actually Be Good, When Used Right

The simple fact is that SEO can actually be used ethically when done right.  Search engine optimization is simply a way of getting your content to the most people possible.

Search engines are the number one method of driving traffic to a site, so it makes sense to make the most of them.

People have given a bad name to SEO by using negative techniques (or Black-Hat SEO) that abuse search engine rules, such as; keyword stuffing, invisible text, doorway pages, etc.

They do this to try to boost their rankings quickly, but the joke is on them as these methods only tend to work for the very short term, if at all!

Thankfully, Google and others are cracking down on websites that abuse these rules, which is great for the rest of us that pride ourselves for following the rules.

You have to remember that search engine optimization is a long term strategy for your site.  There is no “quick” way or “short cut” to success, so you are better off optimizing your site for long term results.

So What Is Ethical SEO

Ethical search engine optimization is a term to describe all the good techniques and tips that you can use that are not in breach of search engine rules (or White-Hat SEO).

There is nothing wrong with optimizing your posts and pages to rank higher, as long as you do it right.

All search engines want to do is provide the best quality content to their users, as this is how they make money.  To do this, they need to look at sites (by crawling them) and establish what a post/page is about.

Optimizing your pages helps search engines to identify what your content is about, therefore enabling them to show it to the right people who are searching for it.

Ethical SEO Tactics

So now we know that ethical SEO is the right way to go, how do you go about optimizing your posts?

One of the key aspects of SEO is keyword placement.

Placing keywords and keyphrases in certain places of your site helps search engines to identify what your post is about. This is called ‘on-page SEO’ and can refer to things like;

  • Page Titles
  • Meta Descriptions
  • Subtitles (H1, H2, H3 Tags)
  • URL Address
  • Image Alt Tags
  • Internal & External Link Anchor Text (and the links themselves)

Whilst these are all good places to include your keywords/keyphrases, it is VITALLY important that you don’t overdo it.  Don’t place too many keywords in these places, as you risk keyword stuffing, which is bad!

A good rule of thumb is that keywords should not exceed about 3% of your overall article.  Think of your keywords as simple sign posts that help tell people what your post is about.

That way, you don’t need to go overboard with using them.

A great WordPress plugin that you can use to help you monitor your keyword density and other on-page SEO is the ‘WordPress SEO by Yoast’ plugin.

Now SEO is not all about keyword placement.  Search engines also look at things like post frequency, social media interaction, and PageRank.

But for the purpose of this post, this is what I will be focusing on.

It’s All About Being Relevant

Another good ethical rule to remember is that things should always be relevant to your content.  Whatever keywords, keyphrases, internal links, external links, videos, images, etc. that you include in your posts, they should be relevant to what you have just written.

For example, if I were to write an article about a certain actor, let’s say Matt Damon, then linking to reviews of movies that he has been in would be totally relevant, therefore justifiable.

If on the other hand I started including links to some car selling site, that wouldn’t be very relevant.

Search engines look at the terms, phrases and links that you use in a post to see if they are all connected in some way.

If they aren’t (as in the example that we just looked as) then they may suspect some dodgy behaviour going on on your site.

If you think about it logically though, you only want to be providing the best quality content to your visitors anyway, so why would you use/link to unrelated things.

Summary

Ethical search engine optimization isn’t too hard to get your head around.  Just remember to follow search engine guidelines and not abuse the system.

It can actually be more beneficial to concentrate solely on writing for your readers, as ultimately it is them that will determine whether your site is a success or not.

Plan out a long-term SEO strategy for your site and work at optimizing your site ethically.  It is much better to work with Google rather than against them!

What other ethical SEO tips do you use that I haven’t mentioned here?  Do you even do SEO on your site and if not, why?

Do you have a positive or negative view of SEO?  Please let us know your views by leaving a comment below!

The articles divided into points, in other words the list posts, have a great success among readers in the blogosphere, because they are easy to read, they avoid unnecessary chatter and they are rich of information.

Writing a list post, means to organize content in a structure that is particularly suited to the web, but this does not mean that you can simply number some stuff and just publish it, in order to get retweets, comments or academics kisses.

You must remember this : Quality above all!

Bloggin Tips about List Post

Here you find 10 blogging tips that you should follow in order to write a great List Post.

1 . Publish Useful Resources

You should take a moment to emphasize in your article the fundamental concept, in other words what you are writing about.

Before think to write about a specific topic, just ask yourself : “Has someone already published a list of the resources listed in my article? Can I give to the readers something useful ?

Try to be innovative in your writing, and avoid what has been said already 1,000 times.

I know that in the blogging niche, this is something not easy at all, but if someone ask you the difference between your list and the one already published by other bloggers, the answer should be very clear.

And above all you should write something really useful. See what I mean :

How to Write an Article in Less than One Hour : 10 Useful Tips

2 . Do Not Complicate: Simplify

The list posts go viral on the web. They respond to the needs of those who have little time available and allow your readers to quickly identify what interests them.

For this reason the list posts are easier to read, in relation to other articles.

You should select the most interesting information for ordering a weighted list. Nothing must be left to chance!

3 . Do Not Overdo the Points

Publishing a list with 150 points makes always a certain effect, but you should think if all these points are really necessary to your article.

Remember that people in internet are lazy and too many points may bore them.

There is not a particular right number of points for your post, each list needs its space to be explained.

I have written a list with 102 points, but actually this is a resume of  Blogging Tips and What I Have Learned, so I guess if it is really worth, you can list many points.

Just try to identify and develop your idea, therefore write the points that you think are useful to explain your concept.

4 . Create Sections

If you are writing a list with many articulated concepts, in order to improve readability, try to divide the points into thematic sections with a title, a bit of an introduction text and a picture.

Also using bold or italics really helps sometimes.

5 . Focus on the Images

When you are working on list posts, you may forget completely about images. This happens sometimes.

But you should remember that you need to include in every article at least one image, as this really helps the viewing of the whole post in the eyes of your reader.

Things to Do - List

6 . Work on Your Headline

The soul of every article is enclosed in its headline. This is the same for a list post. The article headline is your business card in the SERP, in social media and all around the web.

It is difficult to have a second chance, if your headline is not good enough to catch your visitor’s attention, he will not continue reading your post.

A tip: use the numbers in your title, as they really help to understand the content of your article.

7 . Use a Good Format

The points of your list should be easily recognizable and widely spaced, while the header of the paragraphs should follow a consistent basis that brings all the titles in that section to have the same importance.

To be clear : the titles of the paragraphs should be <h2> with similar appearance, the same goes for subtitles <h3> and so on. These are simple but fundamental rules that you need to follow, also for SEO reasons.

If you want to know more, be sure to read these 20 SEO Tips for Beginner Bloggers.

8 . Watch the Number of Points

It may happen that you have 10 points in your headline, then in your content you miss one.

Be sure to proofread your article, and be sure to include in your list post all the points you had in your mind.

Reading again (and again if needed) your content, before publishing it, does not cost you anything.

9 . Choose Between Points and Paragraphs

When you create a list post, you have 2 solutions: the bulleted lists (ordered list in your WP Dashboard – use Alt + Shift + O) and paragraphs.

In the first case there is a real bullet list marked with small icons (or numbers) , in the second you create manually the paragraphs with titles and numbers.

So the question is which option you should use. Just thing about how many points you have to list and how much you can write about each one, and you will have your answer.

10 . Do Not Forget the Call to Action

Occasionally you may find articles that has huge list well written, but without any call to action.

In my opinion, you should include an invitation for your reader. It may simply be a question.

Perhaps there is no need to write anything more, but do not complain if users do not comment, for instance.

At the end of my articles there are always a call to action for invite the readers to comment and leave their own experience.

You can also ask your readers to subscribe to your RSS Feeds, if they liked what they have read.
