Uploaded new version unsucessful

[edit]

Hi, I decided to add unblurred higher quality images to a screenshot I uploaded last year.

The Talhenbont Hall floor plan file I added last year has been replaced, but is still showing up as the current image as it's blurred and doesn't zoom in well. I first added a better screenshot of a book, however the image was still blurred. I then unblurred the image, but when I uploaded the new image, it still didn't upload correctly, so I reverted twice without success, and added a new file again, but still the latest uploaded image is of the first original upload of low quality which does not zoom correctly. Any idea please as to why the current image isn't uploaded correctly and is still using the original upload ? Please take a look at this similar image which I uploaded successfully as a newly unblurred upgraded image. Whilst a third image also has the same issue of not fully uploading the newer unblurred screenshot. You just have to compare image sizes, now over 1mb compared to before to see the uploads were successful, just they are not being displayed correctly. Any ideas how to fix this issue please ?? Cltjames (talk) 01:54, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not to worry, please ignore the question. It took about a week for the upload to update, now the image uploaded is represented by the latest version in better quality and without blur. Cltjames (talk) 22:02, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

how do I use a promotional photo in wiki article that was given to media and public

[edit]

I have several glossy promotional photos of equipment (one also contains a person) given to media and public in 1980's with permission to use them at the time. They gave them away at trade shows without any copyright markings. They were keen to promote the technology and product. The company that gave the photos away ceased to operate ~ 1981 and was later dissolved. One photo contains an image of a person who is deceased ~ 1991. For purpose of putting the photo with person in a wiki article, the face of the person could be blurred out if there is no way to publish it otherwise. is that OK. . Alternately I could seekl permission from the family to publish. note that This photo is already in circulation on the web and in print because it was a promotional glossy BW photo given to anyone that wanted to use it ~ 1980.

How do I use the photos that are equipment only. Neuperg (talk) 23:24, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In that case, it's unlikely the copyright was registered within five years. Still, it's your responsibility to be certain that's the case. Searching copyright databases from that era can be tricky, but not impossible. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 02:14, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Note that I acquired the remaining assets of that company as one of the sucessor companies that last held the assets went through receivership as part of being dissolved. I got a big truckoad of gear as well as a few remaining records and an envelope full of photos and brochures. None of the photos or brochures have copyright markings. Is this information doomed to rot in my archives till I pass away and my kids toss it or is there some way to share it on wiki where the original article is. PDF book preview does not work

[edit]

Hello,

I have noticed that several books which I uploaded time ago can not be displayed by the Commons PDF media viewr. I have already tried to purge the file pages / cash but it did not help. Can anyone help me, please?

These are the files:

Adelslexikon der preussischen Monarchie, II. Band (L–M), 1856.pdf

File:Emilian von Źernicki-Szeliga. 1900. General-verzeichniss.pdf

File:Joannis Dlugossi Historiae Polonicae Liber XII. T. 2..pdf

This is somewhat common after you initially upload a PDF. Try purging and this will almost always fix it. All files display properly on my end. —Justin (koavf)TCM 10:58, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Koavf, thank you for the advice. Almost all files work now except this one: File:Emilian von Źernicki-Szeliga. 1900. General-verzeichniss.pdf. When I purge the cash, it loads the first 3 pages, but when I move forwards, the media player fails... :/ Any solutions?

77.39.172.78 22:32, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming this is about File:Henri de Rohan.jpg, (which is used to depict Henri de Rohan on several WP:s) per [1] you're right, that picture is the Cardinal. Ameisenigel, I see you were the last to edit it, do you wish to comment? It seems we should move the picture and fix Wikidata, to start with. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:44, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have added the depicts statement because this picture was used to illustrate the related Wikidata item. If this is wrong, then we should a) rename the file b) move the image to the correct Wikidata item and c) change the depicts statement on Commons. --Ameisenigel (talk) 11:31, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The source of the image is no longer available, but is archived here. The description is CLAUDE DÉRUET (attrib. à), circa 1627-1629 Portrait du Cardinal de Richelieu en Commandeur des armées françaises so "Henri de Rohan" appears to be an error. TSventon (talk) 15:44, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
At least one other auction house describes this painting as a portrait of Richelieu, commander of the French army at the siege of La Rochelle, oil on paper laid on canvas, attributed to Claude Deruet.[2] The similarity of the descriptions points to a common source, which may have been the owner, who has an interest in describing it in terms most likely to attract high bids. Another auction house, which sold an almost identical painting (at an unknown date, but apparently earlier than 2022) for a mere € 1.250, offered a very different description and attribution, in which this is the portrait of an anonymous gentleman, executed by an anonymous painter from the circle of Frans Pourbus the Younger.[3] I don't know which of the two is more plausible, and possibly one is a copy of tbe other by a different artist, but auction houses, like the owners offering goods for sale, have an interest in achieving high highest bids and are not necessarily the most reliable experts.  --Lambiam 18:55, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. Fwiw, none of these claim it's the Duc. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:59, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Because Commons is not an encyclopedia, We have no reason to allow change.org to be linked here. It's only used for vandalism/attack articles. Very, very few petitions are notable enough to have an article about them. All the Best -- Chuck Talk 21:24, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To upload them here, you'll need to confirm that they're out of copyright in the US and in their country of origin (see Commons:Copyright rules by territory); simpler logos might be covered under {{PD-textlogo}}.

Error when trying to confirm promotion a QI candidate

[edit]

Hi,

I'm trying to submit and confirm a QI candidate for promotion.

When I click "confirm", I get the following popup message "API returned error code 'missingparam' : At least one of the parameters "text", "appendtext", "prependtext" and "undo" is required."

The popup quickly fades away, but the confirm page simply hangs without actually promoting.

I also tried to add a comment (rather than promoting) to the image that I was trying to promote, but I get the same error.

I'd like to "experiment" and see if I get the same error with other QI candidates, but I'd prefer not to cavalierly submit recommendations on that page.

I can see that this error has been noted before by User:Plozessor (Commons:Quality images candidates/Archives December 17 2023), but unclear what the issue was.

Anyway, If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.

Fernando Ortiz photo

[edit]

Hi I would like to use a picture of the Cuban Scholar Fernanfo Oritz for his wikipedia page in english and spanish. I have found a photo that has this licence "photograph of a Cuban stamp c. 1981 with an image of Fernando Ortiz, © Mark Markau/123rf.com" that is the cover of this book Fernando Ortiz: Caribbean and Mediterranean Counterpoints, edited by Stephan Palmié, is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 https://creativecommons. org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/legalcode. I know the book has a CC BY-NC-ND licence but I am not sure about the image. The image is also a stamp so I don't know if I can use it. Dupont96 (talk) 14:01, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Dupont96: Com:Cuba suggests that a 1981 Cuban postage stamp is still in copyright both in Cuba and the USA, so cannot be uploaded to Commons. Copyright in the book is irrelevant, and there is no new copyright in photographing a 2D object like a stamp.
Oritz is long-dead, so you may be able to use the image that was used on the stamp on en.Wikipedia, under that project's fair use criteria (es.Wikipedia does not allow such images). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:06, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Terrarian9111 That video appears to have been released under a standard YouTube license, which is too restrictive for Commons. Generally, 100% original YouTube content (i.e. not a derivative work) that is OK for Commons will be licensed as "Creative Commons Attribution Required License (allows reuse)". Somewhere in the video's description (click "See more") there should be something that indicates "License: Creative Commons Attribution Required License (allows reuse)". This is actually a hyperlink to another page with more details. So, unless you're able to find something along those lines in the video's description, neither the video nor any screenshots taken from it should be uploaded to Commons, unless you're able to get the video creator's COM:CONSENT. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:43, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright thanks for the info, I’ll try and contact the video creator for permission Terrarian9111 (talk) 06:34, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dating Material

[edit]

Please date-stamp materials with the time of submission. Somewhere close to the title of the material is preferred or at the onset of the submission. Thank you for this wonderful work! 2601:2C5:4184:B740:40DF:9947:D4BE:660F 12:22, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Government of Argentina images

[edit]

Are Government of Argentina (federal government) images in the public domain? There are multiple resources online (including in Wikipedia) on Argentine copyright law but the ones I've read do not specifically address federal government images. I'd like to use a photo from this news release by Argentina's Ministry of the Economy in a Wikipedia article and would very much appreciate any guidance. Thanks!

Categories post-move

[edit]

Hi. I recently moved Category:Logos of Dart (programming language) to Category:Dart logos, and for some reason the old title appears as a subcategory of the new one. Is this normal behavior? Thanks. '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talkcontribs) 14:40, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi A1f2a. There's information about this in COM:CONSENT. That page also has non-English versions. Just click on the link at the top for your preferred language. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:28, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Alphonse Maiorino

[edit]

I am looking for information about Allphonse Maiorino he is my great graandfather. 68.192.172.158 18:07, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP 68.192.172.158. This help desk is for asking questions about Wikimedia Commons: it's not really set up to answer general help questions like the one you've asked. The only thing I could suggest would be for you to try an Internet search of the name "Alphonse Maiorino" (using Google or Yahoo! perhaps) and see if you find anything about your great-grandfather. Other than that, you're only alternative might be to ask members of your family if they know anything about him. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:25, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help about publishing a photo

[edit]

Hi, a relative who is an artist and professional photographer has asked me to add to his wikipedia biographical page a photo of him that he has taken himself. I am not sure which type of licence I should use when uploading it to Commons. My relative is happy for this photo to be reused by anyone. Would someone have any pointers please? Lalunanelcielo (talk) 20:03, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lalunanelcielo. Does you're question have to do with en:Antonio Martinelli? If it does, then you should also familiarize yourself with en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest given you're relationship with Martinelli. In principle, you shouldn't be editing or creating content on English Wikipedia about people you're related to; I've added some information about this to your Wikipedia user talk page for reference. Commons, however, is more concerned with the copyright status of the content it hosts, and not as concerned about whatever connection you may have to said content's creator. So, if the photo you want to upload meets COM:L, there should be no issue.
The copyright holder of a photo is typically considered to be the person who takes it, and Commons is going to need some way of formally verifying that said person either (1) has previously released/published the photo under a copyright license that Commons accepts or (2) is agreeing to release the photo under such a license; in other words, Commons needs some way of formally verifying the copyright holder's COM:CONSENT. There's some more general information on this in Commons:First steps and some more specific details in Commons:Volunteer Response Team, but the best thing would probably be to ask your relative to upload the photo themselves with complete COM:EXIF data in as high of a resolution as they're comfortable with using Commons:Upload Wizard to upload the file and Commons:Wikimedia VRT release generator to verify their copyright ownership. As long as the photo hasn't been previously published under a license that's too restrictive for Commons, things should be fine. Once the file has been uploaded and it's copyright status verified, the file can be added to Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:20, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

2 questions regarding the public domain

[edit]

(Posted this to Wikipedia:Teahouse first, hence why most of the links are red: Wikipedia:Teahouse#2 questions regarding the public domain)

I am currently attempting to determine when exactly the oldest feature-length animated films (I will add more films to this list later, but for now let's stick with the 7 listed here) will become public domain in three jurisdictions:

From my understanding, for a file to be allowed on Wikimedia commons, it is required to be in the public domain (or freely licensed) in both the United States and (if its mother country is somewhere other than the United States) its mother country. Meanwhile, for a file to be allowed on the English-language Wikipedia, it is only required to be in the public domain (or freely licensed) in the United States, even if it is still copyrighted in its mother country. (I need to know if these works are (or when they will be) public domain in Canada because I wish to caption/subtitle these works and upload them to my YouTube channel, and I need to make certain that my doing so will be legally above-board.)

In my attempts to determine the copyright/public domain status of these films, I have realized the sheer complexity of this topic. If anyone more knowledgeable on this stuff could answer these two (somewhat interconnected) questions with some degree of certainty, it would make my endeavour much more straightforward:

1. Who is/are considered the "author(s)" of a film (i.e. a work created by many people working together). Is it the director(s)? The writer(s)? The producer(s)? Some combination of these? If so, which of them? I know I've seen copyright tags on files that say something to the effect of "the last author of this work died in 19xx, so this work is in the public domain in countries with a copyright term of life + yy years of shorter", so are the authors a combination of the above people, and when the last one of them dies, then the copyright last for however many decades? If the director(s) is/are the author(s), do "sequence directors" (as listed in the credits of many old Disney films) count? Is it the studio(s)? If so, how does the "life + x years" copyright term apply, given that companies don't generally die?

2. What is "joint authorship" in terms of copyright law? In regards to the rule of the shorter term, Canada's entry here reads "Yes [Canada applies the rule] for foreign works of joint authorship, except for countries party to the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement, i.e. U.S. and Mexico". Clearly, written works with multiple listed authors would fall under the definition of "joint authorship", but if a film has one author, does the rule of the shorter term not apply to that film?

After writing all that out, I'm starting to realize that I have many more than 2 questions. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.
